Muapula Mission - Mozambique

Frits van der Merwe was a pastor in a congregation in Port Elizabeth for a number of years before he and his wife Nickey felt a calling to go to Northern Mozambique. They went to Maputo in February 1993 and to Cuamba in April 1993 where they worked with a local congregation for two years before moving to Muapula in August 1995. He is an ordained pastor in the Igreja Reformada em Mozambique (Reformed Church in Mozambique) with the commission to plant churches amongst the Mahkua people of Niassa Province. His wife Nickey is actually a qualified social worker, but the dire need for medical personnel forced her to run a clinic for a number of years until the government eventually opened a clinic. She is now involved in teaching pre-school at the school on the mission station. They have a daughter, Ansie, age 22 (4th year medical student) and a son, Willem, age 19 (first year engineering student). They have been in Mozambique longer than the other families and have established themselves well in the local community.

His main task is church planting and doing evangelizing work. Two small churches has since been established and he is also responsible for the catechism of the new members as well as preaching. He is also heavily involved in the development of the mission station. This is really time consuming, but bearing in mind that there were only “bush” 12 years ago, he and the others have really worked miracles.
